Sony Ericsson's hyped Xperia X1 Windows Mobile handset (pictured) finally goes up against Nokia's N96 and Apple's iPhone 3G in UK shops this week. The X1 will be available for free on £45 Vodafone contracts, the same price point customers can get the N96 and iPhone 3G. It will also be available from O2 at launch, free on certain contracts, confirmed O2.
Speaking at the launch of PlayNow Plus, Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia unlimited music service, Sony Ericsson chief technology officer Mats Lindoff agreed Sony Ericsson was pitching the Windows Mobile device at the US market primarily. He said: “Operators have demanded a Windows Mobile device for the past five years so it’s driven by them for enterprise customers. Yes, you could say it is primarily for the US market."
The X1 was scheduled for release on September 30, but had failed to appear. This followed rumours it would be delayed until Q1 2009. It is the first product to be released under Sony Ericsson’s new premium sub-brand ‘Xperia’ and is built on the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system.
